Kota Kinabalu: About 76,000 female students aged 13 in Sabah will receive the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccines starting this year, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin.

She said the HPV vaccination exercise against cervical cancer would be carried out at 98 health facilities throughout the State.

Cervical cancer is the Number Three killer, after breast and colorectal cancers, among women in the country.

Rosnah said the Federal Cabinet decided to implement the National HPV Programme on Aug 19, 2009 and had allocated RM150 million for the programme to kick off in 2010.

"However, Sabah only gets to benefit from the programme beginning this year, involving a total of 75,754 female Form One students.

"Up to now, a total of 82 schools from 230 schools in the State have started the HPV vaccination exercise, while the other schools will get their turns based on a fixed schedule that will be implemented in stages.

"The main objective of the programme is to help reduce the burden of this killer disease in 20 years' time and to protect the teenage females from HPV infection.

"The programme is only given to Malaysian female students aged 13, including school dropouts," she said at the launching of the programme at the State-level held at Kota Kinabalu High School, here, Saturday.

Also present were Sabah Health Director Dr Mohd Yusof Ibrahim, Sabah Education Deputy Director Maimunah Suhaibul and the school's headmaster, Ng Kim Huat.

Rosnah said parents should not worry about the vaccination exercise as it would be administered by trained and qualified medical personnel.

She said each girl needs to receive three doses of the vaccine, the second dose a month after taking the first and the third dose six months after the first.

"To get the three doses, all parents need to sign an agreement form, wiithout which the vaccine will not be given," she said.

Meanwhile, Dr Mohd Yusof said out of 76,000 female students, more than 70,000 had been given permission by their parents to receive the vaccine.

  1. Today, I went to the beach front with my kids.

I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear."
She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear.
She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
